For counselors and advocates

A handout for the patient across your desk.

You explain the same bill rules every day. This page gives patients something to take home: what to ask for, what to check, and a free tool that keeps their deadlines. Print it or send the link. No signup for you, no cost for them.

Ahem · free help with a medical bill

Before you pay that bill

  1. 1Ask for an itemized bill. Every line, with the date, code, units and charge. You have a right to it.
  2. 2Get your EOB from your insurer. Its "patient responsibility" line is the most you should owe for that claim. If the bill is higher, ask why in writing.
  3. 3Ask for the financial assistance policy. Nonprofit hospitals must have one. Many families qualify above the poverty line. You generally have at least 240 days from the first bill to apply.
  4. 4Check the dates. Room days, charges after you went home, the same test twice. Small mistakes add up on a hospital bill.
  5. 5Put it in writing and keep copies. Letters start clocks the billing office has to answer to.

Take a photo of the bill and EOB. Ahem flags what to question, drafts the letter for you to sign, and reminds you before each deadline. You stay in charge: nothing is sent without you.

Ahem is a self-help tool. It is not a law firm, a medical provider, or an insurer. Made in Sheridan, Wyoming.
